Pine River falls to Newaygo to close regular season

LEROY — Pine River ended its regular season with a 63-62 nonleague boys basketball loss to Newaygo on Saturday

Newaygo’s Sean Karrip netted a 3-pointer with 3.2 seconds to go for the winning points. It was Newaygo’s only lead of the game.

For the Bucks, Hunter Esiline scored 21 points and nine rebounds, while Conner Hoaglund had 14 points and six rebounds, Mason Powell added 14 points and six assists and Tyler Wing contributed nine points and six rebounds.

“We played a nice first half, though we missed a few easy buckets,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. “We used our size advantage inside to stretch the lead out to 12 a couple of times. In the second half, we let their pressure get to us, and we didn’t do a very good job of getting the ball in to our bigs.”

Pine River (12-8) was up 19-12 after the first quarter, 37-27 at halftime and 48-42 after the third quarter. Newaygo (10-10) had a 21-14 scoring advantage in the final quarter.

“All in all, it was a great high school basketball game to wrap up the regular season, and a good test for us to get ready for districts,” Goodenow said. “Newaygo is a very solid, well-coached and disciplined team, and that’s exactly what we’ll face in the post season.”

Pine River is hosting a Class C district this week. The Bucks face McBain Wednesday night in semifinal action.
