Pine River falls to Lake City, travels to Evart on Saturday

LEROY — Pine River’s football team was shut out 48-0 at home on Friday against Lake City.

Skyler Nelson went 7-of-17 passing for 76 yards and an interception with Greg Park hauling in three receptions for 30 yards and Mitchell McDonald rushing for 33 yards on nine carries.

Kyle Nixon had 10 tackles for the Bucks.

“It was a tough game,” said Pine River coach Terry Martin. “We had a lot of kids play extremely hard. I thought especially in the first half we did some good things. We couldn’t finish off and have those good things transition into points on the scoreboard.”

Pine River dressed 16 players for the game.

“In the second half, we had some kids that had to come out of the game,” Martin said. “As thin as we are, that makes it hard to substitute and cover positions when that starts happening.”

Pine River (1-4) will travel to Evart next Saturday.

Playing on Saturday compared to Friday will be an advantage, Martin indicated.

“There’s a lot of kids playing right now that I like to think will some time be in the playoffs and sometimes you play a playoff game on a Saturday and that should be a good preparation thing for them,” Martin said.

It’s Evart’s homecoming.

“I’m expecting a pretty solid (opponent),” Martin said. “They have a lot of returning experience and a lot of seniors on their team playing for their senior homecoming game. I’m anticipating they’ll come out with a lot of energy and play us a pretty tough game.”

Evart has both rushed and passed for plenty of yards in recent weeks.

“We finished with Lake City which also throws the ball a lot,” Martin said. “Defensively it will be a similar game strategy to that. Luckily we’ve played against spread and wing T teams this season. We won’t be starting from scratch this week or anything.”

The winner will receive the Armed Forces trophy which goes to the victor of this rivalry. Pine River won it in 2010 and Evart has taken it the last two seasons.

Proceeds go to the VFW ‘s Unmet Needs organization.
