Pine River erupts over Lake City

LAKE CITY — The Pine River offense continues to roll.

The Bucks improved to 3-2 overall on Friday night with a 42-14 road win over Lake City.

“This was a pretty good example of a team win,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “The offense was the main (ignitor) for the team. Our special teams stepped up and made the difference of the game.”

The Bucks kicked off the contest with a safety as Payton Pacola tackled Lake City’s ball carrier in the endzone, pushing the Bucks to a 2-0 lead. Mitch McDonald added to the lead with an 84-yard kick return touchdown and Mason Powell added two touchdowns in the second quarter as the Bucks took a 21-7 lead into the half.

Brandon Fulks chipped in a 72-yard touchdown scamper in the third and Dominic Garcia and Jeff Gross added touchdowns the rest of the way as the Bucks took the victory.

“In the kicking game, Greg Park and Mason Powell did a good job,” Martin said. “Mason had some beautiful punts. including one at the one-yard line. Greg Park had a squib kick that we wound up getting back.”

Fulks led the offense with 108 yards on nine carries while Garcia led the way defensively with 13 tackles in the win.

The Bucks (3-2, 1-1 Highland) play Evart Friday. It’s homecoming and Pine River’s final home game of the season. It’s also the annual Armed Forces game between the two teams. Evart had a forfeit win over Marion last week.

“I know Evart has struggled out of the gate a little bit,” Martin said. “At the same time, they’ve had two weeks to prepare. Coach (Pat Craven) does a good job there and will have his kids ready and prepared to play us.”

After this week, the Bucks will play at Manton and McBain and take a forfeit win over Marion.

“I think we’re definitely getting there,” Martin said. “We came off from two tough losses (to Beal City and Godwin Heights) and knew this was going to be a critical week. So we had to bounce back and beat a team we needed to beat. We got an overall good team victory. I think we’re on our way to being where we need to be this time of year.”
