Pine River dumps Mancelona for 2-0 record

LEROY — Matt Goodenow rushed for 112 yards and a touchdown, while Mason Powell ran for 52 yards and two scores on Thursday in Pine River’s 35-6 win over Mancelona.

Dominic Garcia had a 5-yard touchdown run, and Joe Rigling found the end zone on a 48-yard scamper.

Tristen Nelson led the Bucks (2-0) with 119 yards on the ground.

“I thought it was a very good team win for us,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “The first week (against Kalkaska), we depended on our quarterback (Mason Powell) quite a bit. He carried a brunt of the load. In this game, we had some kids kind of banged up and other people stepped up and did well. Both of our running backs did a nice job.”

It “lightened the load” for Powell to get production out of Goodenow and Nelson, Martin commented.

Zach Herron led the defense with seven tackles.

“Defensively, we played great,” Martin said. “It was a good team win for us all the way around.”

Pine River plays Friday at Beal City to open the Highland Conference season. Martin has pointed out Beal City is extremely disciplined and makes few mistakes.

“Obviously, we’ll have to have to have a good night,” Martin said. “You can’t help them out by making mistakes. The biggest thing with them is usually our team speed has helped us in the past. They’re a team that also measures up pretty good with team speed.”
