Pine River drops second straight game

LEROY — Pine River dropped its second straight game with a 28-19 setback to McBain in Highland Conference football action on Friday night.

The Bucks (2-0, 2-2) were led by Matt Goodenow, who rushed for two touchdowns and quarterback Mason Powell, who had two scores.

But it wasn’t enough.

“It was a rough game for us,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “We made way too many mistakes that could possibly lead to a win.”

The Bucks were unable to get an effective ground game going.

“Defensively, their game plan was to stop our run and they did a pretty good job of that in the middle,” Martin said. “It put us in a position where our passing game was opening. But we ended up dropping something like 11 passes for the night. We also dropped two punts.”

Pine River has its homecoming game Friday night against Highland Conference foe Lake City. The Trojans (1-1, 2-2) defeated Harrison 32-31 and Manton 39-12 and lost to Sanford Meridian, 40-18, and Beal City 43-29.

“Lake City has played exceptionally well,” Martin said.
