GRANDVILLE — Pine River’s football team recorded its first win of the season on Friday with a 27-22 nonleague triumph at Grandville Calvin Christian.

The Bucks, 1-7 overall, opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 9-yard run by Luke Hill and 5-yard scamper by Elijah Lewis for a 12-0 lead. Eric Hoogland passed 33 yards to Brandon Steenstra for Calvin Christian in the second quarter. Hill had a 7-yard scoring run and it was 18-7, Bucks at halftime.

Adrian Aydas had a 29-yard field goal for the Bucks in the third. Calvin Christian came back to make it 21-15 on Hoogland’s 15-yard pass to Zach Bylsma. Calvin Christian (1-7) scored to take a 22–21 lead. But Pine River came back with an 82-yard touchdown kickoff return by Lewis.

Lewis had 125 yards rushing, while Hill had 76. Lewis had 10 tackles while Bryan McCurry had eight.

“The final play of the game our defense stopped them on a fourth-and-goal from the 4-yard line,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “QB pressure from Bryan McCurry, Noah Carper and Trenton Holmes made the play.”

The Bucks end the regular season at home on Friday against Reed City.
