Pine River closes football season at home Friday night

GRAND RAPIDS — Pine River fell to 4-4 with a 45-6 nonleague football loss to Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian Friday night.

Payton Pacola scored Pine River’s only touchdown on a 60-yard pass reception from Tyler Wing.

NorthPointe Christian is 8-0.

“Payton Pacola played an outstanding game,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said.”He led us in rushing with 75 yards and in receiving with over 100 yards. Defensively, he was responsible for shutting down their quarterback, who was a pretty special player. Especially early in the game when we were still in it, he played an outstanding game for us.”

It was 29-6 at halftime.

“They’re a very good football team,” Martin said. “They’re loaded with seniors and their quarterback and one of their receivers are special athletes. One of our objectives was to try to hold their quarterback. They have a 6-foot-5, 220-pound quarterback who is the real deal. I thought we played well against him.”

Martin noted Mason Powell guarded a top notch NorthPointe receiver.

“They had an outstanding receiver and Mason did a nice job,” Martin said. “Their running back ended up killing us. We’re not in the personnel position where we can count for everybody.”

The Bucks will try to finish above .500 when they close the regular season at home Friday against Berrien Springs (7-1), which lost 21-19 last week to undefeated Buchanan.

“They have a tailback who is outstanding,” Martin said. “In the last two games, he’s gotten something like 497 yards rushing. Most of those yards are right up the middle. He’s a very explosive running back we’ll have to keep in check if we’re going to have a chance.”
