Pine River boys win two straight

LEROY  — Pine River’s boys basketball team improved to 9-7 with a 51-42 victory over Brethren in nonleague action on Monday.

The Bucks have won their last two games to get back above .500.

When they lost to McBain 65-41 on Feb. 16, the Bucks fell to 7-7. But along with the win over Brethren, the Bucks stopped McBain Northern Michigan Christian at home by another 51-42 verdict.

“Both teams started slow,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. “Neither team could make a basket. In the second half, we finally found a spark and really controlled the boards. I was pleased with the effort we played with in the second half.”

In the victory over NMC, which improved the Bucks Highland Conference mark to 9-7. Tyler Wing had 13 points and six rebounds, while Conner Hoaglund added 10 points and 10 boards.

The Bucks were led by Hunter Esiline with 14 points and Mason Powell with 13 in the loss to McBain Public.

Pine River plays Thursday at Marion and next Tuesday is home with Lake City.
