Pine River boys soccer team falls to Mason County Central
LEROY -- It was the tale of two halves when the Pine River Bucks took on the Mason County Central Spartans in non-league boys soccer action Thursday (Sept. 6).
But the Spartans had the better half, scoring-wise, with six goals in the first half compared to two goals for Pine River in the second. Mason County Central improved to 6-1 with a 6-2 victory while the Bucks fell to 2-4-2.
With the Spartans leading by six goals, Jesse Gingrich almost got Pine River on the board late in the first half but his shot just missed the net.
Less than three minutes into the second half, Nate Millen did get the Bucks on the board. With 18 minutes to play, Schroeder Vanderhoof put in his third goal of the season.
“The second half was a lot better than the first half,” Vanderhoof said. “Our communication is better than what it was last year.”
A Pine River shot hit the cross bar with 30 seconds left to play.
“We came out flat in the second half,” said Spartans coach Scott Scheffler. “I have 10 new players. Pine River played a tough second half. They controlled the midfield”
Ethan Crawford played goal for the Bucks in the first half and Josh Gostlin in the second half.
In the second half, “the kids came out and played,” said Pine River coach Jenny Hoaglund said. “Everyone worked together.”
Boone Alway handled the keeper duties for MCC.
“We want to win more,” Vanderhoof said. “We just have to play better.”
