Pine River boys hope to contend in Highland

LEROY — Coach Eric Gebhard enters his third week of practice for the Pine River’s boys track team with about 26 athletes.

“That’s down,” Gebhard said. “I don’t know exactly why that is. I almost think that’s beginning to be normal. The numbers are dwindling. But it’s a solid 26. We’ll be able to field a good team. The guys here are working hard.”

Standouts are expected to be Chris Terburgh and Ben Rigling in the distances. “They’ll provide us with solid points in conference meets and invitationals.”

Cole Gingrich is expected to be strong in the pole vault. Adam Langworthy is a returning senior in the throws.

“We’re going to be solid top one and two places in just about every event,” Gebhard said. “Depth is something we’ll try to develop with new guys.”

Langworthy, coming off a strong wrestling season, will be looking to improve his throw in the shot put, perhaps in the mid-40s.

“Hopefully I can make state this year,” he said. “I’ll have to throw at least 43 or 44.”

The weather is likely to keep the Bucks inside for awhile. They go on break the end of this week and have an outdoor meet set for April 8 at Coleman. The first home meet is April 14 with Harrison and Farwell. The Pine River All-Sports Invitational is May 3. The conference meet is May 20 at McBain for the Highland. The regionals are May 16 at Clare.

“The team is looking good right now,” Langworthy said.

Langworthy placed ninth last Thursday in the Central Michigan University Indoor meet with a throw of 38-5 in the shot put, Dominic Garcia was 11th in 37-8.

Cole Gingrich was sixth in the 60-meter dash in 7.57 seconds and ninth in the 60-meter dash in 7.4 seconds.

Joe Rigling was second in the 400-meter run in 56.76 seconds. Ben Rigling was second in the 800 meters in 2:13.19. Chris Terburgh was sixth in the 1,600 meter run in 5:15.50 and Derek Hartline ninth in 5;27.95. Terburgh was fifth in the 3,200 meters in 10:55.59. Ethan Crawford was third in the 60-meter hurdles in 9.65 seconds.

The Bucks were one-two in the pole vault with Cole Gingrich at 12-0 and Colten Rawson at 11-8.
