LEROY -- Pine River built huge early leads and forced Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart to try to mount a rally that fell way short Monday night.

Lincoln Erickson scored 17 points and had 10 rebounds while Tyler Lewis added 12 points and Mitchell McDonald contributed 10 points and five assists to lead the Bucks to a 64-45 non-league boys basketball victory.

Devin Ruppert added six points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Bucks who improved to 3-0.

Sacred Heart, 1-1, was led by Mitchell Myler with 17 points.

Sacred Heart, despite trailing by 23 points in the second quarter, started making a game out of it in the third. A slam dunk at 1:27 by Brooks Hyble off a steal cut the Bucks’ lead to 46-36. It was 48-36 going into the fourth.

“We knew it was coming. We talked about that,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said, referring to the Irish’s comeback. “We said this was a good team and they’re going to make run. Be prepared for it. That’s what I was anxious to see. I wanted to see how they would respond.”

But Pine River opened the fourth with a 4-0 run.

Joey Bauman drove for a basket and 58-39 Pine River lead with 3:29 to play. Moments later, Joe Gingrich had a 3-point play for a comfortable 61-39 lead.

“That’s a real solid team,” Goodenow said. “We were a little bit worried about the match-up with their size. Our guys got out and run. That’s been our secret, to push the ball. So we kept doing it.

With Pine River up 39-20 at halftime, Devin Ruppert scored for the Bucks to open the second half.

The Bucks fired out to comfortable first-half leads. Tyler Lewis fired in a pair of triples and Bauman added one in the first half for a 21-10 Pine River lead.

Pine River’s offense was clicking on all cylinders. On an inbounds pass play, McDonald passed to Ruppert who dribbled down the baseline and passed off to Erickson who converted for the easy score an a 27-10 lead early in the quarter. Lewis netted another triple with 4;37 to play for a 32-12 lead.

Lucas Harris scored at 2:19 and it was 39-16, Pine River.

The Bucks, 3-0, play at McBain next Tuesday, Dec. 18.
