LEROY — Pine River’s boys basketball team posted a 53-47 victory over Beal City on Monday in Highland Conference boys basketball action.

Mason Powell scored 18 points and Tristen Nelson added 11.

“We’re pleased with a great team effort,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. “We played with excellent energy from the opening tip, which we’ve been spending a lot of time stressing to the guys.

“Down the stretch, it was a close game and we put the ball in the hands of our seniors and they did a great job.”

Pine River is 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the Highland.

Powell scored 18 points, while Owen Gray had 11, Hunter Esiline 10 and Tristen Nelson nine to lead the Bucks past Harrison in non-league play 56-39 on Jan. 3.

Pine River was up 15-10 after the first quarter, 31-20 at halftime and 50-28 after the third quarter.

“Mason scored 12 points in the first quarter,” Goodenow said. “Then they put a box and one on him and Hunter really stepped up and started to attack the basket.”

Pine River lost to McBain last Thursday 74-45. Gray had 10 points and six rebounds. Nelson had 10 points.

“McBain is a tough team,” Goodenow said. Pine River is at Marion on Wednesday.

“We still have a long way to go, but we saw some progress,” Goodenow said.
