LEROY – Pine River boys basketball coach Scott Benson can hardly wait for the season to start.

Pine River will be home against Harrison next Tuesday in nonleague action to open the season.

“We had a scrimmage against Cadillac and Cedar (Spring) and we did very well,” Benson said. “We’ve had a very good practice (Monday). We shot very well, made good decisions. The big guys are starting to focus on getting inside. We’re looking good.”

Benson has been impressed with freshman Mitchell McDonald.

“He won’t start the first few games but when it comes to crunch time, he probably will,” Benson said. “He’s just everywhere. He’s a complete player. He can score.”

Benson said the quickness of Joe Bowman, junior, and McDonald, will give the Bucks plenty of backdoor opportunities.

Returning starters include Lincoln Erickson, Devin Ruppert and Skyler Nelson.

WRESTLING

Pine River’s wrestling team is in action at home against Manton on Dec. 7 to open another season with coach Tim Jones.

Mitchell Kelsey at 135 pounds, Abel Langworthy at 130 and Larry Kissinger at 145 are among the key returnees for the Bucks. Kissinger and Langworthy wrestled in the state finals.

“We’re very balanced,” said Jones. “We’re ready for a good season.”

The Bucks will be defending their Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference title.

We know Benzie Central will be good and Manistee has gotten better,” Jones said.
