LEROY — Andrew Park broke a tie with a home run in the bottom of the fifth to lift Pine River to a 5-4 win in the second game of a nonleague doubleheader over Big Rapids on Wednesday.

The Bucks also won the opener 5-2.

"We started out a little rough and didn't play that well defensively in the first game," Big Rapids coach Sam Daugherty said. "We got better as the day went along."

Adam Frisbie went the first four innings for Big Rapids in the first six-inning game and Garrett Daum went the last two. Elliott Blair had two hits and a run scored while Johnny Yonker had two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Justin Cook started for Big Rapids and went three innings while Daum went the final three and took the loss.

"This was a real good high school baseball game," Daugherty said. 'We were up early. Then they tied the score and went ahead. I liked the way our kids kept grinding and approaching their at bats. We were limited in the pitch count so we threw three different pitchers today because we had to save some for our conference doubleheader on Friday."

Jackson Lund had two home runs and three RBI for Big Rapids. Frisbie had a triple and RBI.

Raden Holmes was the winning pitcher in the first game, going 3 2/3 innings and allowing three runs on three hits while striking out three. Mason Powell got the save. Andrew Park had two RBI. Masa Ogawa and Powell had Pine River's only two hits.

"I like how aggressive we played," Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. "We're getting better every game. Our pitchers are getting more consistent. Our fielding is getting more consistent."

Tristen Nelson was the winning pitcher in the second game, going two innings. Ogawa had two hits for the Bucks. Park had four hits including the game-winning home run. Bradley Holmes also had a hit.

"I like the way the young kids are getting better," Ruppert said. "With the new pitching regulations, it's nice to have guys come in and throw strikes."

Pine River (7-2) is at Evart for the Osceola Tournament on Saturday.
