Pine River baseball team takes another district title

MANISTEE  — Pine River won its fourth straight Division 3 district title with wins over Manistee 15-3 and Manton 10-0 in Monday’s tournament.

Mitchell McDonald was the winning pitcher in the first game going five  innings, striking out nine, giving up two hits and walking three. Tony Moore pitched the final inning.

Lucas Harris had two hits and three RBIs, while Moore had two doubles and four RBIs, Alex Knapp had two hits and an RBI, McDonald contributed two hits and Mason Powell and Andrew Alberts both had RBI singles.

Greg Park went all six innings in the second game, striking out 12 and walking two.

“I thought both pitchers threw well,”’ Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “We only had one bad inning fielding the ball. That was in the first game. We got a little sloppy when we were up. I was real happy with our defense.”

Powell had three hits with a double and triple with three RBIs. Knapp had two hits and two RBIs, Tyler Wing a double and three RBIs and Park had two hits and two RBIs. Harris, Moore and Marcus Washington had two hits apiece.

“Up and down the lineup we had some big hits,” Ruppert said. “The guys came in and did some good things. I think the guys are playing with confidence. When they go out, they expect to win.”

Manton defeated Lake City 7-0 to reach the finals.

The districts were rescheduled from Saturday because of rainouts.

’It may have helped us a little bit because we had a game on Wednesday,” Ruppert said. “It gave Greg and Tony an extra couple of days to rest. They both throw pretty well.”

The Bucks (32-3) will play at Newaygo Saturday in a 10 a.m. game against Muskegon Oakridge.

“I know they have a decent No. 1 pitcher,” Ruppert said. “We’ll have to play good ball.”
