Pine River baseball team remains undefeated
LEROY — Pine River’s baseball team was 2-0 on Saturday to win the Cadillac Invitational.
Lucas Harris and Mitch McDonald had hits and scored on a two-out double by Alex Knapp in a 2-0 win over Sault Ste. Marie to win the semifinal game.
Greg Park was the winning pitcher.
“Greg pitched a great game the first game and Mitch (McDonald) threw a solid game for us (in the second),” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said.
The Bucks (7-0) played in the title game against Big Rapids and won 6-2. Big Rapids defeated Cadillac in the semis.
“I was happy with our timely hitting,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “I wish we would have hit more consistently throughout the day. Our pitchers pitched well and our defense was good all day.”
In the second game, McDonald went all seven innings, allowed one unearned run, had eight strikeouts and allowed eight hits and no walks.
Mason Powell was 2-for-4 with an RBI, Marcus Washington was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs and McDonald was 2-for-4.
“The first game, we could have executed better,” Ruppert said. “We ended up with runners on and didn’t score until Alex got that big base hit. We had a few base running mistakes in that first game. The second game, I thought we made the most of our runners and moved them around when we had them on. I thought we were patient at the plate.”
Pine River 19-3, Manistee 0-1
The Bucks move to 5-0 after a two-game sweep of Manistee Wednesday.
Pine River flashed the bats in Game 1, recording 18 total hits. Park earned the three-inning win and had seven strikeouts. McDonald pitched six innings with 11 strikeouts for the win in Game 2.
This was Pine River’s first games back from spring break.
“We hit the ball really well at Manistee the one game,” Ruppert said. “We’re getting our reps in. Some of the guys are trying to be more consistent at the plate. I think we’ll get there.”
