LEROY — Pine River lost to Bear Lake in summer baseball action 7-4 on Friday.

The 15-and-under Pine River team had Raden Holmes on the mound to start the game for three innings. He was followed by Tristan Nelson and Matt Stone for two innings apiece.

“They were pretty decent, kind of like an all-star team from the area,” Pine River coach Brent Ruppert said. “They take kids from all over.”

At the plate, Luke Hill had a double while Brad Holmes, Nelson, Andrew Park and Stone had singles.

“We put the bat on the ball on Friday,” Ruppert said. “We didn’t have much to show for it. They were pretty aggressive trying to hit the ball. It was a close game, 4-3, all the way up to the fifth inning. Matt Stone, I had him as a freshman last year. I tried to give him experience this summer. He did pretty good. Hill will be an eighth grader and Park a freshman. It was good to see them put the bat on the ball.”

Ruppert figures several of these players will be on the junior varsity team next season. “I take kids under 15, and it’s good experience for them,” he said.

Thursday, Pine River is home against Manistee, and will host Onekama next Monday. Games start at 6:30 p.m. Another game is tentative for home July 27 with Tri County at 2:30 p.m.

The high school team wrapped up its summer schedule with a 10-9 loss to Frankfort on the road Wednesday.

“I was really happy,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “Tony Moore, I thought he pitched well. It was basically an all-star team we played. So I was really pleased with my kids.”
