Pine River baseball senior reflects on season

LEROY — Matt Goodenow is among the Pine River senior baseball players who ended their high school careers at the district tourney earlier this month.

A highlight of the season was an 11-game winning streak that ended with a loss to Elkton Pigeon-Bayport in the final of the Pine River Invitational.

“We just need to work on getting runs when our pitcher is doing good,” Goodenow said. “We had been playing fundamentally smart, working together and getting the bat on the ball.”

Goodenow has been playing first base. It’s his second varsity season.

“I think I’ve improved quite a bit,” he said. “I’ve gotten my hitting up. I changed up my stance and started keeping my weight back more.”

Goodenow has felt comfortable with his defensive abilities at first.

“We’re always looking forward to keep on rolling and improving,” he said, adding the key to success is “hitting the ball,” and cutting down on errors.

Pine River lost to Mason County Central in the district semifinals.
