LEROY — Pine River had another solid baseball season and five players received honors recently from the Highland Conference.

Senior outfielder Mason Powell batted .427 with 38 hits nine doubles, three triples, four home runs, 39 RBIs and 22 steals. He also was 3-1 as a pitcher with 37 strikeouts in 27 innings.

“He came back strong after his season was cut short last year,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “He was our leader in many offensive categories and was very encouraging to our younger players. He's a great defensive center fielder.”

Foreign exchange student Masa Ogawa, a catcher, batted .453 with 39 hits four doubles, two triples and one home run, plus 32 RBIs, 31 steals and two strikeouts.

“He's a very good defensive catcher with good knowledge of the game,” Ruppert said. “He's a very good base runner with good bat control.”

Andrew Park is a junior outfielder with a .347 batting average, 25 hits, six doubles, three home runs, 24 RBIs and eight steals.

“He has a good arm in the outfield,” Ruppert said. “He displayed much better power this year after being injured for much of last season.”

Tristen Nelson, a senior pitcher, had a 7-2 record with one save, 2.24 ERA, 32 strikeouts, 24 walks and 36 innings of work. He batted .284 with six doubles and 27 steals.

“He's one of our leaders on the field,” Ruppert said. “He's very consistent for us on the mound with only one bad outing all season.”

Sophomore third baseman Luke Hill batted .306 with 19 hits, four doubles and 17 RBIs. He was also 6-0 as a pitcher with a 2.78 ERA.

“He had a very solid year on the mound and in the field,” Ruppert said. “He improved greatly as a hitter.”
