Pine River, Reed City split doubleheader
REED CITY — The temperatures were extremely warm Monday night but Pine River and Reed City softball players managed to keep their cool in salvaging a split of a doubleheader in summer league action.
In the first game, Reed City prevailed 16-3 in five innings. Pine River took the second game with a 9-7 lead as the contest was called because of darkness after 3 ½ innings.
In the opener, Courtney Morgan threw a one-hitter in four innings, striking out 10 batters. Julianne Griffin had one strikeout.
Morgan helped her own cause with two hits while Alex Baughan, Skyler Brigham, Griffin and Amanda Steig had one hit apiece.
Griffin will be an eighth grader next year but has been given the opportunity to do some pitching for the summer high school team.
“I’ve been playing in another league in Mount Pleasant,” she said adding that the emphasis this summer has been “throwing accurately.”
In the second game, Eleanor Forbes had a two-run double for Pine River, which took advantage of several walks from Reed City pitchers. Brooke Sebastiano also had a key hit for PR.
Taylor Steig had a key two-run single for Reed City. Morgan had two hits while Arnold, Brigham and Amanda Steig, had one apiece.
“It was really hot, but we’ve got a lot of kids, about 17 showing up every week,” said Pine River coach Laura Mumby. “We can switch them in and out and give them good looks at different spots. The kids are learning a lot every week. It’s been beneficial to us.”
“I thought Courtney Morgan looked as good as she’s ever looked tonight, we’re excited about that,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “We mixed a lot of girls in. We’re getting ready for next year.”
Last Wednesday in the Mount Pleasant League, Reed City lost 12-3 to Buckley. Courtney Morgan started and struck out eight, walked seven and allowed four hits. Julianne Griffin came in relief in the fourth. She walked three and gave up two hits.
Sydney Arnold and Morgan both had two hits. Kalee Hensel, Skyler Brigham, Griffin and Amanda Stieg had one hit apiece.
In the second game, Reed City-Evart lost 7-3 to Pine River. Amanda Steig gave up eight hits in taking the loss. Morgan contributed three hits while Kalee Hensel delivered a pair. Arnold and Riley Lawson were credited with one hit apiece.
