Pine River, Reed City hosting weekend tourneys

LEROY — Home wrestling tournaments are on tap this weekend with the Pine River Bucks and Reed Coyotes both having events set for this week.

Both events on Saturday take on the team format. Action starts both places at 9 a.m.

Reed City will be hosting Byron Center, Charlevoix, Elk Rapids, Hesperia, Mason County Central. It will be a five-match round-robin with each team taking on each other.

“Two teams coming in, Byron Center is ranked 10th in Division 2 and Mason County Central eighth in Division 3,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “I guess you’d have to consider them the favorites.”

Steig said his team shouldn’t be counted out.

“Our kids have been wrestling well,” he said. “We’ll be in the thick of things.”

Also at the Pine River tournament will be Forest Area, Traverse City St. Francis, Cedar Springs, Godwin Heights and Traverse City Central.

“Cedar Springs is a bigger school and has a strong program,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones. “They’ve always been tough. Godwin Heights was solid from last year. I’m expecting Godwin and Cedar to be tough opponents.”

Pine River was eighth out of 20 teams on Dec. 21, prior to the holiday break, in the Marquette Invitational.

New Lothrop was first with 246. Pine River had 92 points.

“We were hoping to be in the top 10,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones. “We would have liked to have placed a little higher. Eighth was OK.”

Nathan Park (103) was sixth, Tony Moore (112) was fourth, Chase Morrison (285) fourth, Elliott VanDreumel (125) third and Kyle Nixon (140) second.

“Kyle, to be in the finals at Marquette for his senior year was a special occasion,” Jones said. “This is the best Elliot has wrestled all year long. It was a solid tournament for him. Chase Morrison upset one of the top seeds in the tournament to make it into the placing round. For him it was a special day.”

Just about every Pine River wrestler scored for the Bucks.

Reed City resumes Central State Activities Association action Jan. 8 at home.

The Coyotes had two matches prior to the break in CSAA action and went 1-1.

The Coyotes defeated Central Montcalm 33-27 and lost to Hesperia 42-36.

Gong 2-0 for Reed City were Kyle Lawrence (103), Matt McGahey (119), Adam Kehr (152), Devin Ward (160) and Jon Green (171).

Drake Walker (140), Andre Burks (189), Evan Skiver (215) and Travis French (215) were 1-1.
