Pine River 119-pounder having solid season

LEROY — Pine River’s Robert Ragatzki is having some of his best wrestling performances at the right time.

This marks the end of the regular season with the team districts set for this week. Recently at the Reed City Invitational, Pine River took first with four individual first-place performances. That included Ragatzki, who went 2-0 at 119 pounds.

“I started out a little slow, I wasn’t ready,” he said. “I didn’t wrestle over half the day, then I had a match. I got into the finals. It was a pretty tough match.”

He beat Matt McGahey of Reed City 4-2.

“He had his best tournament of his life,” said Pine River coach Tim Jones.

Ragatzki has started out 23-10 and indicated he’s happy with that.

“Taking first (Saturday) was pretty nice,” he said adding that of his five years of organized wrestling, this has probably been among his best seasons. “Over the summer, I’ve been working hard, put a lot of time in and it’s paid off.”

Ragatzki said he’s improved in riding on top.

“Takedowns and moving on bottom, I still need to work on that,” he said. “I want to make it to states. Last year, I was one point away from making it. I’ll have to put a lot of effort in and make every point count.”

The Bucks will host team districts Thursday.

“I think we have good potential of making it to states this year,” he said. “We’ll have to work hard at regionals. As long as we wrestle tough, we can probably do it. Last year and this year have definitely been the better teams (he’s been on).”
