Pine River 1-1 at home softball invitational

LEROY — Pine River girls lost the first game of its Saturday Invitational 12-6 to Montabella.

Bekah Dean, Jenna Johnson and Chelsey TerBurgh had two hits apiece. Alexis Bennett, KayLee Goodman and Taylor Warner also had hits. Alexis Bennett was the starting pitcher and pitched two outs. Dana Hill went the rest of the way.

The Bucks beat Benzie Central in the consolation game 17-6. Pine River had a 16-3 hits advantage.

“Heading into the last month before districts, it was nice to see us attack the ball in Game 2 against Benzie,” Pine River coach Laura Mumby said. “When we consistently do what we can, these girls have the tools to reach their goals.”

Jenna and Kyla Johnson and Carleigh Trowbridge had two hits apiece. Bennett pitched three innings and Kourtney Brock pitched the other two.

The Bucks are at Beal City on Friday.

Pine River is 9-11 overall.

“We had a good second game,”Mumby said. “We couldn’t get our bats rolling in the first game. “It was slow to get going. The second game, our bats carried us through.”

“We need good defense and better hitting,” Goodman said.

Pine River 10, 19 Mesick 11, 9

Pine River (8-8) lost the first game 11-10 of a nonleague doubleheader Thursday but won the second 19-9. Bennett was the losing pitcher the first game and Hill won the second. TerBurgh had three hits the first game and Dean added two.

”The first game we were down 11-3 and came back to make it 11-10,” Mumby said. “In the second game, to score the runs we did, I was happy with our bats. We played better defensively in the second game.”
