Phenix sets pitching record in Reed City pre-district loss
HART — Shelby outlasted Reed City 3-2 in 10 innings Wednesday in this Division 3 pre-district game.
But Reed City coach Marty Shaffer called it his team’s best game of the season. Ray Phenix went 9 2/3 innings and set a school record with 22 strikeouts, allowing three runs on six hits. Shelby scored the winning run on a walk-off single with two outs in bottom of the 10th.
Quinton Kichak, Jeffrey Phenix and Leland Yonkin had hits for Reed City, which scored single runs in the third and fourth innings. Kichak had an RBI and stolen base. Jeffrey Phenix also had an RBI
Reed City’s season ended at 12-24.
“We’ve got a lot of guys coming back next year and we’re looking forward to it,” Shaffer said. “We’ll miss Ray obviously.”
The Coyotes will have a summer league starting up June 15 with a three-week league. Reed City will be playing teams like Big Rapids, Evart and Pine River.
