Numbers for summer workouts pleases Evart girls basketball coach

EVART — Evart girls basketball coach Paul Higgins has had a busy summer with his program but has especially been pleased with the numbers he’s seeing.

The Wildcats have had various activities including a three-team camp in late June at home against Reed City and Charter Crossroads Academy.

“We were involved in a local league with Crossroads, Morley Stanwood, Reed City, Pine River and Big Rapids,” Higgins said. “We took a JV group to Roscommon for a day and scrimmaged some teams there. We’re getting ready next week for a team camp at Manistee.

“I think we’ve made some progress. We’ve had a lot of younger kids which is good. It’d be nice to get more of the returners there and other kids coming up. But it’s summer and you have to do with the numbers you’ve got and with who shows up. Other than that, its been a pretty good summer. We’ve had good turnouts.”

Higgins was scheduled to have practices Monday through Thursday last week to get ready for the camp at Manistee.

Evart graduated all-Highland Conference standout Mara VanOrder from last season’s team but returns standouts such as Brooke Belleville.
