EVART — Alex Newton and his Evart boys track team have had an excellent season so far.

They’re hoping it only gets better.

The Wildcats have the Division 4 regionals coming up this weekend and then the Highland Conference meet next Tuesday.

In Evart’s final home meet on May 7, Newton, a senior, took first in the 200 (23.9) and won, as the first leg, the 400 and 800 meter relays and the open 100. He was first in the two relays in 45.1 and 1:35, and third in the 100 (12.8)

The 200 has been his event all year with a time of 23.1, which he clocked earlier this month at Lakeview.

“I want to break 22.8,” he said. “I need to work on my form and my stride.”

It’s his fourth and final year of track, and his best one.

In the 200, Newton hopes to get first place in the league and regional meets.

“I think I have a good chance,” he said. “I ran a time equal to 12th in the state last year. I went to state but didn’t run in the finals race.”

Newton said a good start is the key to his success in the sprints.

“We’re increasingly strong (in sprints),” Newton said. “I feel we can become first in the state again by (bigger) margins.”

Last season, Evart won the Division 4 team meet. Newton is hoping the Wildcats can do it again.

“It’s been a fantastic season,” he said.
