LEROY -- New coach Brian Goodenow is working to get his Pine River Bucks ready for a boys basketball season that starts Dec. 3 at Harrison.

The first home game is Dec. 10 with Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart.

Goodenow was appointed to take the job in early summer.

“I didn’t get to spend a whole lot of time with them,” Goodenow said. “The guys participated in some things before I could work with them. I was limited with my time with them.”

Practices started Nov. 12.

“We’re working on getting to know the guys around us, their tendencies, and talk about our philosophy for this year and how we tend to operate things with a new coaching staff,” Goodenow said.

It will be a different look Bucks team this winter.

“The first thing people will notice is that we’ll really try to up the tempo,” Goodenow said. ”We’re deep at guard and have a lot of athletic kids. Certainly we’ll still run offensive sets. Our goal will be to push the ball up the court and force the issue on defense.”

Goodenow said his starting rotation might change frequently. Four of the regular starters are back from last year with seniors Lincoln Erickson and Devin Ruppert, junior Skyler Nelson and sophomore Mitch McDonald.

Nelson will be out for a few weeks from game action, still recovering from a collarbone broken during football season.

“We’ll take our time with him and make sure he’s fully healed,” Goodenow said.

The roster boasts seven seniors. There are 13 varsity players and 13 JV performers. Travis Eastlund is coaching the JVs.

The Bucks will have a scrimmage this Friday in Cadillac. On Nov. 30, the Bucks are at Morley Stanwood for a four-team scrimmage.
