New Evart girls coach will look forward to next season
EVART -- Tara Batdorf was getting extremely excited with her first year as Evart girls track coach.
But now she'll have to wait for 2021 with the cancellation of the 2020 season because of the coronavirus issue.
Batdorf joined the coaching staff for the 2020 season. Todd Scott had been girls coach but switched to the boys to replace Dennis Peacock, who retired.
Batdorf was officially the girls coach, but under Scott's system coaches were going to focus on specific events for both teams. Batdorf was going to focus on the hurdles
At Evart, Batdorf is the middle school social studies teacher in her first year. It's her first teaching job although she's been a substitute teacher for four years at various schools.
She was in the military and is from Michigan, and is native of Breckenridge where she played volleyball.
"I love working with kids out of the classroom and the kids had actually asked me to take the track position," Batdorf said. "I coached volleyball this year for the middle school."
The Evart track team got in one week's worth of practice before the MHSAA suspended sports on March 13 and cancelled them three weeks later.
"It was a definite disappointment," Batdorf said after the suspension and prior to the actual cancellation. "We created a workout plan for the kids and stuff they can do at home."
Batdorf was hoping for a season but wasn't sure what the next step would. But she's planning to coach volleyball in the fall.
