Nelson reflects on strong season for Pine River
LEROY — Brock Nelson won't forget the 2016-17 wrestling season for a long time.
Nelson helped the Bucks make it to the state semifinals for the second straight season. For the individual finals he placed fifth at 135 pounds. He pinned Connor Baldwin, of Erie Mason, in 31 seconds.
Nelson was in his freshman season. He was 30-8 after his first 38 matches.
"That's where I expected to be," he said. "I had a lot of tough matches that could have gone either way."
He took first place at various invitationals including at Reed City and Mio Au Sable.
"I beat a pretty good kid at Mio AuSable," Nelson said. "The Marquette Invitational at the beginning of the year, that was a highlight."
It was at Reed City in late January where Nelson listed his goal as being top five at the state meet. He accomplished that feat.
"I have to work hard at practice, and be mentally and physically prepared and be ready," he said.
