Mund bidding for another strong season with Reed City basketball

REED CITY — Matt Mund is coming off a strong first-year of Reed City varsity basketball and is looking to carry that over into his senior season.

Mund played a key role for a team that won the Class B districts and hit some key free throws in the critical win over arch-rival Big Rapids.

“It was a big step,” he said of the transition to the junior varsity.

Mund was 9-of-12 against Big Rapids from the free-throw stripe.

“I really didn’t make it much to the free-throw line last year, just the district game,” he said.

During the summer, Mund put in as much basketball time as he could.

“This year, I got a concussion playing football early in the season,” he said.

But Mund said during preseason that he’s at full health.

“I’m getting back at it,” he said.

Mund said his role will be basically the same from last season: basic guard duties and 3-point shooting.

Last season, he took his share of 3-point attempts.

“I did pretty good,” Mund said. “I’m not sure of what I shot percentage wise.”

But he did well enough to gain confidence and continued to shoot the 3-pointers.

“You have to focus and have confidence,” he said.

Shooting and defense will be among his strengths, Mund said.

Reed City opened the season Tuesday at home with Cadillac and opens the Central State Activities Association Gold Division season.

“We’re looking pretty good,” Mund said. “We’ll have a good shot this year. We’ll be quick. Big Rapids is going to be tough this year. We’ll, be up there.”
