Monday Masters League remains popular at Spring Valley

REED CITY  —  Monday afternoon golf at Spring Valley Golf Course means the masters league, featuring golfers 55 years and older.

The league started on April 20 and will wrap up Sept. 21.

Among the participants is Garry Ruttle, a former Reed City teacher and coach, who spends his winters in Arizona. But he is in Reed City during the summers and takes advantage by playing in the Monday Masters League and on several other occasions at Spring Valley.

Ruttle plays in the Thursday night men’s league and occasionally in the Friday couples league with his wife. The masters league is competitive, Ruttle pointed out. He’s been in the league at least 10 years

“Some of the guys that play on Thursdays play here Monday,” Ruttle said. “It’s very competitive.”

He added he golfs three times a week during the winters in Arizona. He is in the Mesa area.

Don McGreehan is the league secretary and said there are about 50 in the Monday Masters League.

“It’s down a little bit,” from previous years, McGreehan said.

Other leagues at Spring Valley include the Sunday Scramble, which tees off every Sunday afternoon, plus the Monday Women, Tuesday Men, Wednesday Women, Thursday Men and Friday Couple leagues.
