Michell competes in Midwest Meet of champions

REED CITY — Her spring summer track season has concluded but now Reed City’s Sami Michell has started her summer schedule

Michell competed in the Midwest Meet of Champions, earlier this month at Fort Wayne, Indiana.

“Sami was voted team captain, by the other Michigan athletes, so she was leading and carrying the American Flag,” said Michell’s mother and Reed City track coach Vikki Michell.

Michell ran in the 800 relay and in both hurdles.

“Sami ran very well,” Vikki Michell said. She was running probably her fastest time in 100 hurdles, until she hit last hurdle and stumbled. Her relay was a group of girls from all over state. Two girls were from Detroit Renaissance.”

Other local athletes competing were Trent Karcher of Chippewa Hills in the 200 and 800 relay, Clark Ruiz of Big Rapids in the 200 and 800 meter relay and Travis McCuaig.

On June 1, Michell won four events the second straight season at the Division 3 track and field championships at Comstock Park and also scored 40 points to take the second-place team trophy.

She took first in the 100 hurdles for the fourth straight season, first in the 300 hurdles and long jump the third straight year and first in the 200 meter dash her second straight state meet.

She will start her collegiate running career at the University of Michigan this fall.

“I was so excited,” Michell cried with a huge smile after accepting the second-place team trophy. “I’ve wanted to win a team trophy forever. I figured we needed more people to make it happen.”
