EVART -- Taylor McLachlan has been a key addition to the Evart girls basketball roster this season.

The Wildcats scored a 41-37 victory over Harrison on Monday to enter the holiday break at 2-4 overall.

The key was “our team working together and trying to stay out of foul trouble,” McLachlan said.

The Wildcats have seven players on the varsity roster, making the need to stay out of foul trouble critical. When freshman Mara VanOrder drew her fifth foul late in the game with Harrison, McLachlan and her teammates had to fill in a critical void.

“When one of us gets into foul trouble, The rest of us has to watch it because we have such a small team,” McLachlan said.

She didn’t play last year but McLachlan had been playing since the seven grade.

“I just missed it,” she said.

McLachlan is playing a guard and specializes on defense.

“I’m getting better with each game,” she said. “I think our team is too. The more we practice and the more we come together, we’ll be in good shape.”

McLachlan said she’s been working on her shooting.

“I’m trying to get my shot back down,” she said. “Taking a year off hurt that. We work on shooting a lot.”

The team is off until Jan. 3 when it plays at Manton.

“The more we get in shape the better we’re getting,” McLachlan said. “We’re running a lot and we’re shooting a lot trying to get our shots down. We have a lot of young players.

“I’m having a great time. The team is amazing. The coach is working well with us.”
