Evart, Reed City, and Pine River were in action this weekend

BIG RAPIDS – Big Rapids hosted its annual December wrestling invitational on Saturday with Reed City and Evart in action on the day.

Reed City fifth

Reed City placed fifth in the Big Rapids Invitational at 4-1. Reed City defeated Lakeview 40-39, Evart 69-12, and Traverse City West 48-28.

East Kentwood defeated Reed City 48-30.

“The loss to Kentwood created a three-way tie for first place in our pool in the tie breaker,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said. “We wound up third in our pool and in the cross over with the other pool we would wrestle Big Rapids for fifth.

Wrestlers going 5-0 were Izaiah Lentz (150), Bryson Hughes (190), Wyatt Spalo (285) and Carter Johnson at (106).

Wrestlers going 4-1 were Elijah Lentz at (144) and Logan Kindig at (132) and Barron Bowman (113). Wrestlers with two wins were Connor Ward (165), Hunter Fagon-Moyer (175) Noah Morgan (215) and Myles McCarthy (138).

Other wrestlers with wins today were Andrew Kiaunis (157), Hannah Los at (120) and Caitlyn Chiger at (126).

“We are off to a great start 6-1 overall,” Steig said.  Today our expectations as a group were a lot higher than a fifth-place finish but after we took one on the chin I am certain that our athletes will turn that loss into a positive learning experience and move forward at full throttle.”

Wednesday, Reed City is at Greenville vs West Ottawa and Byron Center.

Evart at Big Rapids

Evart’s wrestling team was also at Big Rapids. 

“We were a little shorthanded, but we're able to come away with a few positives from the day,” Evart coach Ben Bryant said. “Wrestlers with winning records on the day were: Clayton Keysor 2-1, Owen Craven 3-2, Cole Staats 2-2, Michael Lodholtz 2-2, Riley Ransom 3-2, Cole Hopkins 5-0, Alex Burhans 4-1, and Joseph Kunin 1-1.

Next weekend Evart wrestles in Mount Pleasant.

Pine River wrestlers

Pine River had its season opener in St. Louis on Wednesday.

“It was very solid competition against the host and Lakeview,” Pine River coach Terry Martin said. “We lost to St. Louis 51-16. As a Final Four team from last season we knew we were up against a solid line up. Kids wrestled pretty well for our first match out. Ryder Holmes (144), Andrew Baldwin (215), Caleb Gepford (285), and Jericho Holmes (open) picked up wins.

“Round 2 we had a couple really big come-from-behind wins by Zack Rizor and Andrew Baldwin. Caleb Gepford, Ryder Holmes, and Jericho Holmes all finished a great night with a second win. Bryant Wing (106) also had a victory to finish the team score at 42-36 falling just one match short of the team win.”

On Saturday, Pine River had five matches. The Bucks defeated Carson City-Crystal 54-18, while losing to Tri County 42-30, Comstock Park 47-24, Sparta 44-33 and Belding 48-24.

Bryant Wing was 5-0 for the Bucks while Jericho Holmes, Ryder Holmes and Andrew Baldwin were 4-1.
