LEROY — Maddie Marks is a senior Pine River’s softball team is counting on for plenty of contributions this season.

This marks her second varsity year with the Bucks.

Last season, “it went pretty good,” she said. “We had a tough season. We’re doing better this year. We have a lot of seniors this year. We’re pretty young. Our pitching is young.”

Marks recalls the challenge of adjusting to the varsity level last season.

“The pitching is a lot faster and the fielding is faster and everything,” she said.

Marks played center field last season and is looking at right field and is now at center field.

“In center field, you have control of everything,” she said. “My strength is catching pop flies and if I have to run a long distance, I can still get behind the ball and get it.”

When it came to hitting last season, “I did all right,” Marks said. “I struggled adjusting at the beginning. By the end of the season, I was pretty good at hitting. You have to adjust to the timing.”

Pine River is home with Benzie Central on Thursday.

“We have a young team,” Marks said. “We’re good at using what coach tells us.”
