MARION —The Marion Rod & Gun Club is sponsoring a 5 Stand Shotgun League starting in January.

The league is in a heated and lighted facility. The cost is $15 per week. Membership is not required to participate in the league.

Leagues will take place on the four Thursdays and four Sundays in January. The Thursday dates are Jan. 4, 11, 18 and 25. The Sunday dates are Jan. 7, 14, 21 and 28. The club is located at 3404 21 Mile Road.

Shooting on Thursday starts at 5:30 p.m. and goes until all action is finished. Action on Sunday starts at 1:30 p.m. and goes until finished.

Shooters will receive a Marion Rod & Gun Club shirt and prizes.

The heated and lighted 5 Stand is unique in northern Michigan for shooting in the winter months. The club also has a premier sporting clays course, a voice-activated trap field and a high volume skeet field. Participants will receive prizes, a Marion Club shirt, prizes and a chili dinner at the conclusion of the league.

Interested persons can call (231) 590-3366 or 231 409-1366 for more information.

Club member Mike Grice said 5 Stand shooting is very popular because it’s indoors in a heated facility.

“You’re shooting clay birds,” he said. “You shoot out the window holes.”

There are five stations, or stands, and six to 18 strategically placed clay target throwers (called traps). Shooters shoot in turn at various combinations of clay birds. Each station has a menu card that lets the shooter know the sequence of clay birds he or she will be shooting at.

The shooter is presented with five targets at each station, first a single bird followed by two pairs.
