Maddox having strong freshman soccer season

REED CITY  —  Reed City soccer freshman Ethan Maddox has been having a strong offensive season for the Coyotes.

Maddox has been among the team’s top scorers this season. He scored two in a game the Coyotes lost earlier this year in a Central State Activities Association shootout against Kent City.

He had seven goals entering the month of September. The loss to Kent City “was one of the better games myself and the team has played,” Maddox said.

Reed City has won two games this season. Today, the Coyotes play at Kent City with hopes of getting that third win.

“We’ll get them next time,” Maddox said after the loss at home against the Eagles.

Maddox’s role has been to score and he’s been doing a credible job of that for the Coyotes.

“It’s my speed and handling the ball,” Maddox said of his strengths.

The Coyotes have several freshmen on the team, coached by Doug Emington. That includes Maddox, who has emerged as one of the top players.

“I feel a lot more comfortable after the first few games,” he said. “I’m working on my penalty kick shots.”

He missed one in that first game against Kent City. But Emington consoled Maddox afterwards, reminding him it was his goals that got the Coyotes to the shootout and in a position to win the game. It’s a matter of faking out the goalie, Maddox added.

The Coyotes are entering the final weeks of the regular season.

“The key is communication and teamwork and ballhandling,” Maddox said.
