MSU athletes work with wrestlers at Pine River camp
LEROY — It was a week for Pine River wrestling summer camp with a bit of Michigan State flavor to it.
Coach Tim Jones and his Pine River staff had their second summer camp on Friday and Saturday. The camp involved technique learning and wrestling, along with whatever recreational activities the wrestlers were able to get in despite weather conditions.
The camp was open to wrestlers entering eighth through 12th grade. Instructors were Michigan State wrestlers including Jones’ son and former Pine River state champ Luke Jones.
Along with Pine River, there were wrestlers from Forest Area, Lake City, Manton, Pine River and Reed City. Tim Jones said a 75-minute session of instruction would then be followed by wrestling.
“We hope to do more next year,” Jones said. “We’ll make it bigger and better.”
There are five sites where the MSU wrestlers have high school camps.
Michael McClure was among the MSU wrestlers conducting the sessions.
“We’ve about doubled our numbers (at Pine River) which is nice to see,” McClure said. “For the most part, we’re showing them a bunch of techniques.”
Pine River has had an active summer season.
“This is pretty much it,” Jones said. “Football starts. We coupled this with football weight lifting.”
Jones’ assistant Terry Martin, is the new Pine River football coach.
