Luther baseball team posts 8-1 record

LUTHER — A solid summer season has ended for Luther’s Pony League team, which posted an 8-1 record.

Larry Lucas was the coach for the team, which played its final game in late June.

The team covered the 13-15-year-old age group.

“We had a good season,” Lucas said. “We had a good team. You can’t complain   about 8-1.”

The only loss was 5-3 to a Lake City team.

“Most of the other games were pretty much that we wiped them right out,” Lucas said. “We didn’t have enough players at the end of the season.”

Lane Ruppert was among the top pitchers for Luther along with Sasha Huffman. Aiden Kanouse added to the pitching depth.

“Everybody pretty much did something, we had a good hitting team,” Lucas said. “Everybody was pretty close. We had a lot of good hitters. Everybody did well.”

Other opponents include Leroy, Tustin, Lake City, Marion, McBain and Cadillac.

“We beat Cadillac by a lot this year,” Lucas said. “Usually they have a pretty good team. That was the highlight of our years. We played extremely well.”

Luther also had a minor league boys team, 7-9 years old. There was also a Tee-ball team, 5-6 year-old.

Pine River 15U

Brent Ruppert coached a 15U Pine River team that played during the summer. Pine River got four innings in last Thursday against Cadillac before getting rained out. The Bucks also played against Brethren.

“A lot of teams are having a hard time getting players,” Ruppert said. “We were supposed to play this Wednesday at Cadillac.”

The team basically consists of players that will be freshmen and sophomores in next year’s program. Luke Hill, a member on this team, was a freshman on the 2016 Pine River varsity team.

Ruppert said he usually runs this team in case players are too old to be in the Pony League.
