Local wrestlers set to compete at state finals

REED CITY — Reed City and Pine River will be sending wrestlers to the state finals March 3-5 at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

The wrestlers qualified for the state meet by finishing in the top four of their weight classes at last Saturday’s regional tournaments.

Reed City’s Alex Brummel (135) placed third in the Division 3 regionals at Chippewa Hills.

“Alex is 32-4 now this season,” Reed City coach Roger Steig said.”I’m pretty excited about him going to the state meet. He hasn’t seen anybody yet this year he couldn’t have beaten. He had a tight match against the guy that won the regional. I think things look good for Alex in two weeks.”

Brummel, a junior, will be making his first trip to the state final.

“We’ll probably travel to some other schools to see outside competition the next two weeks,” Steig said. “Alex has pretty good composure. I’m looking for a good state tournament out of him.”

Pine River wrestlers

Pine River qualified nine wrestlers for the state finals. Dylan Stephens (103) was second, Andrew Park (112) and Nathan Park (119) were both first, Jaycob Roberts (125) third, Tucker Fansler (130) second, Joe Rigling (160) fourth, Raden Holmes (171) second, Josh Jackson (189) first and Brian McCurry (215) third.

“Getting them to the state finals is a real boost especially for the team finals we’ll have on Friday,” Pine River coach Tim Jones said. “It’s exciting for the boys. All the boys are wrestling well.”
