Little league all-star teams in action

REED CITY — It’s all-star week for Reed City-Evart Little League teams. Action for the Major Division (11-12) and Minor Division (9-10) teams started earlier this week and continues through the rest of this week.

The older squad is coached by Tom Strach of Reed City while Matt Kailing of Reed City and Mark Sochocki of Evart coaches the Minor Division squad.

Strach’s squad includes players from Reed City that were on a 12-0 team that he coaches.

The Majors opened at Muskeg on Tuesday and plays at Big Rapids on Wednesday and is at White Lake on Thursday.

Teams bid to qualify for the next round.

“They accumulate the number of innings you play and the number of runs scored against you,” Strach said. “You also have to watch your pitch count in three games in a row like that.”

Hunter Morrison, Josh DuBreuil, Dave Worrell and Jeff Phenix will be among the pitchers for Reed City-Evart.

“Basically anybody can throw on our team,” Strach said. “When we pick our team, we make sure some of the kids can pitch.”

There were two Reed City and two Evart teams in the Major Division this season.

Strach’s team, 12-0, was sponsored by LeBaron.

“That’s a good accomplishment with these kids,” Strach said. “They got the pleasure of playing baseball and not losing.”

The Minor Division team has been practicing for three weeks going into this week, Sochocki noted. There are six Reed City and six Evart players on the squad.

The schedule called for games earlier this week from Monday through Wednesday.

“We have to win two of three games, then we would play in a championship game Saturday to go to the next level,” Sochocki said.
