Late goal costs Coyotes in loss
REED CITY — The Lakeview boys soccer team notched the winning goal late in the game and avenged an earlier loss to Reed City Tuesday night with a 3-2 Central State Activities Association verdict.
David Wheeler and Caleb Ruvalcaba scored for the Wildcats, who had lost earlier in the year at Lakeview to Reed City 6-4.
“Defensively we did much better,” Reed City coach David Mix said of the rematch. “Obviously they did much better. We lacked getting quality shots on goal.”
Ben Schermerhorn scored in the first half for Reed City to tie the game 1-1. With 17:45 to play in the game, Ruvalcaba broke free and fired the ball in the net for Lakeview.
Reed City tied it with 11:04 to play. The ball bounced off the top of the Lakeview net and came down to Ricky Droke who headed it in for his 14th goal of the season.
“We didn’t play up to our potential,” Droke said. “How our warmup goes is how our game goes.”
Lucas Sweet was goaltender for Lakeview and Caleb Lohrmann for Reed City.
The Coyote, 4-9-1 overall, play their final home game on Monday against Mason County Eastern. Reed City is 2-3 in the CSAA.
“It was a bit disappointing with our lack of possession,” Mix said.
Lakeview is 4-11.
“It was a hard-fought game from both teams,” said Lakeview coach Chris Smith. “We usually play a good tough game against Reed City everytime. They were trying to do a lot tonight with No. 3 (Droke) tonight. We were able to focus our attention on him instead of splitting it.“
