Lakeview wrestlers sneak past Reed City

REED CITY — Reed City just ran out of wrestlers Wednesday night in the Coyotes’ Central State Activities Association (CSAA) showdown with Lakeview.

After 12 classes, Reed City was up 33-26. But the Coyotes voided at 103 and 112 and Lakeview took the team win, 38-33.

“We knew coming in they had a tough squad,” said Reed City coach Roger Steig. “We had a couple of matches that didn’t go our way that we thought would go our way. Some matches went our way that weren’t supposed to.”

In the Lakeview match, Austin Davy at 119 pounds opened the action against Reed City’s Abe Angious with a 15-0 technical fall victory and 5-0 lead.

Jess Gourney beat the Coyotes’ 125-pounder Matt McGahey, who had a strong third period but fell 9-1.

Riley Reynard at 130 increased Lakeview’s lead to 13-0 with a 10-2 major decision over Brendon Marsh.

Reed City got on the board at 135 pounds with Thayne Stieg pinning Evan Saxton in 4:37.

Derrick Raser, trailing 2-0, turned over Tony Seaborn for a pin in 2:46 and cut the gap to 13-12. “That was a huge win for him,” Steig said.

But Lakeview went back up 19-12 at 145 when Keegan Ellison pinned Drake Walker in 5:30. Reed City’s Adam Kehr stayed undefeated at 18-0 with a pin over David Wheeler at 152 pounds in 2:28. It was 23-18 after Terry Grieser won 11-0 over Reed City’s Devin Ward at 160. Lakeview’s Garrett Cavendish prevailed 7-1 over Dylan Chrispell at 171.

Andre Burks at 189 defeated Joe VanZytveld 11-4 to cut Lakeview’s lead to 26-21. Evan Skiver pinned Riley Nunley in 23 seconds at 215 and Gerald Beamer won by 38 seconds on a pin over Yaseem Masa. But the two forfeits cinched the Lakeview win.

“Knowing we’d be forfeiting two classes, we knew we had to get up on them early,” Steig said. “Lakeview responded well to everything we did. It was a hard-fought  match. In the end, we just ran out of people.”

“We had a couple of kids score bonus points for us that were down and losing,” said Lakeview coach Todd Barton said. “They came back, wrestled for three periods and sealed the win for us.”

For the Coyotes against Newaygo in a 42-21 win, Marsh at 125, Kehr at 152, Ward 160, Burks 171, Chrispell 189, Skiver 215 and Beamer at 285 all picked up victories.

Lakeview is 3-1 in the league and 16-5 overall.

The Reed City wrestling team improved to 13-5 on the season on Thursday night as it took on Mio and Gladwin in Gladwin.

The Coyotes beat Mio in the first round 58-14 and defeated Gladwin in the second round 40-24.
