Kleeves leading attack for Evart wrestling

EVART — Jacob Kleeves has gotten off to a strong wrestling start for Evart this season, and is confident he can keep it going.

Kleeves was 3-2 at 140 at the Big Rapids Invitational to open the season. He’s a senior in his second year of wrestling.

“Last year, I went pretty even,” he said. “It was really good for my first year being on such a small team. I was pretty much at .500.”

Kleeves has started out the season 6-6, and indicated he’s a stronger wrestler this season.

“I do a lot of good techniques,” Kleeves said. “I feel being at 140, I’m way more competitive than I was last year at 152. I’m really good at escapes.”

Last season, Evart only had five wrestlers on the roster. It’s up to 20 this winter.

“It really helps eliminating voids so we can be in bigger matches,” Kleeves said. “We want to go to team districts and show people we’re here to fight.”

Evart is slated to return to action this week with a match at Frankfort and will be at Manton on Jan. 11, at Pine River on Jan. 25, at the Reed City Invitational on Jan. 28 and at Lake City on Feb. 1. A home meet is scheduled for Jan. 18 against an opponent to be announced later.
