Kelsey returns to Pine River girls basketball lineup

LEROY   —  Pine River senior Michelle Kelsey is back in the Bucks basketball lineup this season and her teammates and coaches are glad she is.

Kelsey and the Bucks tipped off their season Tuesday at home against Reed City. They also play at home Friday against Morley Stanwood.

Kelsey comes off the volleyball season in which she was an all-Highland Conference performer for the Bucks. She did not play basketball last winter.

“I ran indoor track last year,” Kelsey said. “I decided to mix it up a little bit.”

Kelsey had played varsity during the 2011-12 season.

“It went pretty well,” Kelsey said of her sophomore hoops season, “I learned a ton that year.”

After her junior season of not playing, Kelsey decided she would play during the 2012-13 basketball year. She also underwent some preparation work for the sport during the

offseason.

“I ran all summer with the girls,” she said, adding that her athleticism allowed her to make a smooth transition to basketball. “I’ll either be a wing or a guard and will be running the floor. That ought to be exhausting.”

It’s been similar to her role in past seasons.

“I’m quick so I use my speed to run the floor and I think I’m a pretty good ball handler and a pretty good shooter,” Kelsey said. “I think I need to work on  my off-the-ball defense.”

“The team is coming together pretty good,” Kelsey said, prior to Tuesday’s opener. “We lost a lot from last year. We just have to rebuild. I think we will progressively get better as games go on and as people get more experience.”

Kelsey admitted it was “weird” walking into the gym for a basketball practice and not seeing a volleyball net.

“I thought volleyball went OK,” she said. “I felt we didn’t achieve the potential we could have. But it’s OK.”
