REED CITY – Reed City Seniors Andre Jones and Taylor Pelton were honored this month by the Highland Central State Activities Association Gold Division Conference from the recently completed boys basketball season.

Jones, a first-team honoree, averaged 11.7 points, 2.3 rebounds, 0.5 assists and 2.9 steals a game.

Pelton, an honorable mention choice, averaged 7.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 0.8 assists, and 0.9 steals per game. Mykel Dillard, a senior guard, had a strong season with 9.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game.

The Coyotes finished at 13-9.

“We had seven seniors and our class was solid,” Reed City coach Dean McGuire said. “To a man, I think they would say we were disappointed with how things went. We had a solid season. But I think we went into the season thinking we could score more than we did.

“Andre was a leader for us. Taylor was a leader for us. Those two guys were our team captains. Mykel Dillard was right there with us. Those three led us. Taylor defensively was rock solid for us. We had to have him on the floor for his toughness and rebounding ability and scoring around the basket. Andre had the ball in his hands a lot. Those two were our leaders this year and Mykel was right there also.”

The Coyotes graduate seven seniors, but have four players returning who saw playing time.

“With our style, we played all 11 kids consistently when they weren’t injured,” McGuire said. “Logan Straub logged a ton of minutes for us and is coming back, Karsten Koopman, a sophomore for us this year, has grown every day I see him, it seems. He’ll be a big kid for us in the middle next year. There’s Trent Sturgell and Brandon Evans. Brandon, I think, will surprise people next year. He’s got a lot of talent. We’re excited about the four we have coming back, for sure.”
