Johnson completes strong senior season for Pine River volleyball

LEROY — Kyla Johnson will now focus on getting ready for Pine River’s spring softball season after her final year with the volleyball squad.

Johnson and the Bucks ended their season at districts with a loss to McBain. She was among the key seniors on the team this season.

“We fought pretty hard especially in the second game,” Johnson said after the McBain match. “We got tired mentally and physically. The second game, our serve receive was good. We had a lot of miscommunication during the night.”

As for the season, “overall, this is probably one of the best teams I’ve played on,” Johnson said. “I’m glad I got to spend my senior year with them.”

It was an emotional ending for Johnson.

“As a team we got along inside and outside of games so well,”Johnson said. “We were all best friends. We never had any fights between each other. We were always so happy and could make each other smile.”

Highlights included a win over Reed City in nonleague action, plus a victory over Elk Rapids.

It was Johnson’s third varsity season.

“I think last year was probably my best one,” she said. “This year I stepped up more as a leader and played a role I needed.”

Johnson will also play club volleyball during the winter and is considering college volleyball.

“I’ve been asked to play for a few different places,” she said. “It’s a decision I need to make with my family.”
