Jakes event set for Saturday in Reed City

HERSEY — The Crossroads chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation has scheduled a Jakes Event for Saturday at the Reed City Sportsman’s Club.

Registration for the event will be 9-9:30 a.m.

“We’ll have some shotgun shooting, some .22s,” Evan Traynor, of the Crossroads chapter, said. “We feed them food and have prizes for them.”

The event is free for youngsters ages 8 to 17.

“The NWFT considers them as Jakes, that’s what they call the program,” Traynor said.

Osceola County resident Marshall Wickens is helping to organize the event.

“I think it’s a wonderful opportunity,” he said. “The local sportsman’s club and (NWTF) Crossroads Chapter will give kids a chance to come out and experience outdoor activities they may not get a chance to do. We’re offering a shooting day at the sportsman club range. They can come out and learn about rifles, shotgun or archery equipment.

“I think kids have lots of options on how to spend their time. We’re doing all we can to encourage them to learn to enjoy the outdoors.”

Wickens hunted during the May 2-31 turkey hunting season.

“I heard people have struggled a little bit with the weather,” he said of the first two seasons. “But overall, they’re doing well.”

Wickens said he feels there’s a good number of turkeys available for hunters.

“But like anything, it’s spotty,” he said.

NWTF events remain popular.

“Our focus is on habitat preservation, new hunter recruitment and safe use of firearms,” Wickens said. “It’s an exciting time for us. The (NWTF) is partnering with other conservation organizations to improve habitat in Michigan and nationwide. We have good people donating their time. The Jakes event is new to us and we’re excited about it.”
