REED CITY – Reed City has had several key players on a football team that is in first place in the Central State Activities Association Gold Division.

The talented players include Trent Howell.

“Trent is having a good season. He is starting at inside LB for us and doing a good job,” Reed City coach Scott Shankel said.

Reed City is 5-0 overall and 5-1 in the league. The Coyotes have a key matchup Friday night at Newaygo.

Howell is a senior who also plays offensive guard. He starts on defense.

“My strengths are reading my reads and filling the holes,” Howell said of his defensive responsibilities.

The Coyotes were disappointed with a tough nonleague loss to Cadillac to open the season but have bounced back with four straight wins. A 22-7 win over Big Rapids last Friday established Reed City as the team to beat for the league title.

Howell has played a key in the turnaround.

I’ve improved quite a bit from last year especially in getting downhill,” he said. “We need to improve on pursuing the ball.”

The Coyotes have won a good share of titles in the past and are still hungry. Howell expected Tri County to be tough and the Coyotes pulled out a hard fought 18-12 win over the Vikings in a home CSAA Gold game earlier this season.

Howell said he worked on football all summer. He also plays baseball.
