Hoernel having strong season for Coyotes

REED CITY —  One of the players having a strong season for Reed City’s boys soccer team has been junior Lorenz Hoernel, who especially was scoring a lot earlier this fall.

“He’s assisted on most of the goals Ethan (Maddox) has scored,” Reed City coach Doug Emington said earlier this season. “He has quite a few goals himself from the mid-center position. He’s a pretty solid player.”

It’s his second year of Reed City soccer.

Last season “was OK,” Hoernel said. “We had a lot less people, a lot less freshmen as well. We had a lot of juniors and seniors that year. This year, we’re a very young team.”

Hoernel started the year out as a scorer and later focused on passing. His role compared to last year “is probably about the same,” he said. He plays midfielder while last season, Hoernel was at forward.

“I’m looking more to get the ball (to the other scorers),” he said, adding  he’s an effective shooter “with my right (foot). My left is terrible.”

As the season has progress, Hoernel has been focusing on getting better with the left foot.

“We need to work on passing, working together much more and communication,” Hoernel. “When the 50-50 balls are up in the air, we have to work on getting those.”

Reed City closes its regular season this week and enters district action next week.
